This is necessary as we want to use PidginContactList as the widget name of the
actual contact list widget.

I mean this seems to work but out of curiosity where is PIDGIN_CONTACT_LIST_WINDOW defined? I didn't find this string in any file except here.

The macro G_DECLARE_FINAL_TYPE defines it.
